Overview
5G puts a tremendous load on existing infrastructure. As new topologies and standards emerge, your systems will need to support them quickly, reliably, and at scale—all while continuing to maintain existing connections. 5G is driving innovations in higher performance, more features, and lower total cost of ownership.
From access to the edge and through the core, AMD solutions are omnipresent in the network. We continue to innovate and invest so that your network infrastructure is 5G-ready today, tomorrow, and into the future.

Packet Networks
Network Slicing, Ethernet and IP Networks for 5G, Cloud, and Edge Computing Applications
Generations of Ethernet in One Chip
Ethernet is everywhere. AMD FPGAs and adaptive SoCs provide the ability to scale Ethernet with baud rates from 10M to 112G PAM4 and beyond. Whether on the edge supporting a client that is growing from a single 10M port to 1G or 10G, or in the core scaling from 100G to 800G to high FlexE rates, AMD provides a solution.
Adapting to Evolving Specifications
As new specifications emerge, AMD enables the fastest time-to-market solutions. Integrated programmable logic enables new protocols and services leveraging best-in-class hard IP and high-speed SerDes.
Throughout the 10+ year life cycle of communications systems, protocols continually evolve, and AMD keeps pace. AMD enables the widest variety of serial protocols with a combination of world-class transceiver technology, highly flexible integrated IP, and the programmable logic to leverage both.
Timing
Speed is no longer the only metric that matters. Networks now rely on accurate timing information, lowest latency, and responsiveness to a wide variety of network traffic. AMD solutions provide:
- High-precision 1588 timing accuracy
- World-class round-trip transceiver latency
- Timing solutions to enable next generation 5G networks and beyond
Optical Transport Networks
AMD offers a broad range of solutions leveraging the highest performing transceiver and fabric technologies for next generation terabit networks while maintaining legacy services over modern networks.
Integral to the Internet
Transport networks (OTN and IP) provide the backbone of the internet, and AMD is an integral part of that infrastructure. The reason for our ongoing presence is adaptability: flexible use of integrated IP, high speed transceiver configurability, and high-performance programmable logic.
Integrated IP for Enhanced Payload Termination
AMD integrated IP provides lower power, higher performance and easier to implement features for the most challenging functionality. Systems often require terminating client or line side FEC or, increasingly, varying levels of encryption. Versal offers integrated solutions for both of these features: reusable FEC in a variety of integrated Ethernet and Interlaken IP and independent High Speed Crypto (HSC) blocks for implementing AES-128/256.
Legacy PDH/SDH Services
Maintaining legacy services can be more challenging than implementing the cutting edge. AMD provides an elegant gateway for incorporating existing PDH or SDH services into newer systems via proprietary OTN mapping or packet networks (via circuit emulation). High-speed transceiver features allow regeneration of emulated services. SyncE and 1588 support further enhances the ability to accurately recreate clocks between remote clients.

Converged Access Network
Multiple Access Protocols over a Single Fibre for 4G/5G Fronthaul, PON, Backhaul, and more.
Runtime-Configurable Converged Access Network
AMD devices can be configured at runtime to support multiple protocols (xPON, CPRI, eCPRI) enabling their use over any network topology (packet or TDM). Replacing multiple technology-specific hardware components with a single, reconfigurable AMD device reduces up-front network cost and creates a new software-programmable network paradigm.
xPON Services
Converged access carries not only 5G data but enables the same hardware to be software configurable for use with xPON networks. This ability creates a converged access solution that brings RAN and broadband access together. The various PON interfaces drive specific requirements that impact transceiver hardware. Beyond nominal rates and voltages, CDR lock time is paramount to facilitate dense time-domain multiplexing. Burst CDR is supported for all UltraScale+™ and Versal NRZ transceivers.

Cable Access
Integrated Solutions for Next-generation DOCSIS 3.1/4.0 Applications.
Adaptable, Efficient Hardware Solutions
Zynq UltraScale+ RFSoC ZU28DR and ZU48DR are ideal devices for remote PHY applications. The integrated ADCs and DACs backed by programmable logic and integrated SD-FEC offer a uniquely adaptable solution for cable access as standards continue to evolve and consolidate.
Soft Decision Forward Error Correction is fundamental to achieving low error rates on the QAM and OFDM signaling used for DOCSIS implementations. By integrating 8 SD-FEC blocks into the ZU28DR and ZU48DR, it’s possible to achieve 80% lower operating power compared to a soft implementation.
