AIM-T Manageability Service Vulnerabilities
AMD ID: AMD-SB-9012
Potential Impact: Arbitrary Code Execution
Severity: High
Summary
A researcher reported incorrect default permissions and Dynamic Link Library (DLL) hijacking vulnerabilities within AMD Integrated Management Technology (AIM-T).
AIM-T is designed to enable AMD Desktop and mobile Architecture for System Hardware (DASH) manageability on AMD PRO hardware. AIM-T Manageability Service (AMS) is the component of the solution designed for Windows® to support Wireless Manageability on the AIM-T system.
The researchers’ report noted that incorrect default permissions (CVE-2023-31360) were set during the AIM-T Manageability Service Software installation process. The researchers also found that the Access Control List (ACL) permissions for the installation folder and its subfolders/files were not appropriately configured. This oversight could potentially allow lower-privileged users to escalate privileges, resulting in arbitrary code execution.
AMD was able to reproduce the issue (CVE-2023-31360) and believes it occurs because the AIM-T Manageability Service Software operates with elevated privileges, becoming vulnerable when the user consciously changes the installation directory to a non-default location during installation.
The researcher also reported a DLL hijacking vulnerability (CVE-2023-31361) that could allow attackers to escalate privileges, resulting in arbitrary code execution. AMD was able to reproduce the issue and believes it occurs because the AIM-T Manageability Service Software does not include checks to prevent a dynamic load of DLLs’.
