AI Accelerated Video Editing with DaVinci Resolve 18.6 & AMD Radeon Graphics
Oct 13, 2023

DaVinci Resolve is one of the leading video editing solutions that combines editing, color correction, visual effects, motion graphics, and audio post-production all in one software tool. With the DaVinci Resolve 18.5 release in early 2023, the team at Blackmagic Design added several AI tools and capabilities to the application that are focused on enhancing production quality, while saving editors significant time per project. These features include AI accelerated object detection, upscaling, and intelligent masking/color grading.
With the latest update to DaVinci Resolve 18.6, the AMD and Blackmagic Design engineering teams closely collaborated to enable an optimized machine learning pipeline for running AI workloads on AMD hardware, leading to a significant performance boost to several community favorite AI features. This performance boost is the result of migrating select features to the Microsoft DirectML platform API which is then accelerated with AMD User Mode Driver’s ML (Machine Learning) layers. These changes paired with new performance/stability optimizations now allow AMD Radeon™ RX 7900 XTX graphics cards to offer up to 4xfaster neural engine performance when using Davinci Resolve 18.6, dramatically improving the content-creation experience on Radeon™ graphics.
Magic Mask: The magic mask palette uses the DaVinci Neural Engine to detect people and objects, tracking their movement in a shot. This tool is great for users who want to color-grade objects in a frame as quickly as possible. With the DaVinci Resolve 18.6 update, this feature is now over 4x faster on the Radeon RX 7900 XTX GPU when using the “better” settings.
Super Scale: This unique upscaling algorithm creates new pixels when increasing the resolution of an image. For editors using the latest ultra-high resolution 8K Displays with DisplayPort™ 2.1 on the latest AMD Radeon™ RX 7000 Series graphics cards, Super Scale upscaled images preserve more details when compared to upscaling with the standard resizing controls. With the DaVinci Resolve 18.6 update, this feature now delivers over 1.5x more performanceon Radeon™ RX 7900 XTX graphics cards.
Speed Warp: For high-quality slow-motion, time lapses, and complex motion scenes, Speed Warp generates new frames when you're speeding up or slowing down footage resulting in smoother and more realistic-looking speed changes. With the DaVinci Resolve 18.6 update, Speed Warp now performs 3x better on the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX.
These are some examples of popular AI tools used in DaVinci Resolve 18.6 running on the Radeon™ RX 7000 Series graphics cards. See below for a comprehensive list of features that have been further optimized for Radeon™ RX 7000 Series graphics cards.
