AMD at MWC 2025: Driving the Future of Telco and AI

Apr 18, 2025

MWC Barcelona gathered the global telco ecosystem to explore transformation, and AMD was there at every level, from cutting-edge demos to strategic discussions in the boardrooms. In the latest episode of AMD Tech Talk, Jim Greene sat down with Piotr Weglicki, Global Telco Segment Lead in AMD’s Server Business Unit, to unpack the biggest trends from the event—and how AMD is enabling telcos to rethink what’s possible.

“AI was everywhere at MWC,” said Piotr. “And AMD is powering AI across the board—with a performance continuum that spans CPUs, GPUs, adaptive SoCs, and AI PCs.”

AI Is the New Telco Differentiator

From AI-driven operations and predictive maintenance to personalized service delivery and energy optimization, AI wasn’t just a theme at MWC—it was the headline.

And telco operators aren’t just observing—they’re investing. Across the industry, operators are actively exploring how AI can unlock new revenue streams and drive new levels of efficiency.

AMD is uniquely positioned to support this transformation. Whether it’s training large models in the cloud, running inference at the edge, or optimizing AI performance per Watt, we have the platform breadth—and the ecosystem—to deliver.

The AMD Booth: Where Innovation Got Real

Our booth attracted significant attention with end-to-end demos featuring:

  • AMD Instinct™ GPUs
  • AMD EPYC™ CPUs
  • AMD Versal™ adaptive SoCs

Industry leaders including Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, ZTE, Dell, HPE, Lenovo, Supermicro and Gigabyte demonstrated how AMD technology is powering real results right now.

Built with the Ecosystem, for the Telco Edge

At AMD, we don’t go it alone. We work hand-in-hand with our ecosystem partners to deliver solutions purpose-built for telco workloads—from 5G Core to Open RAN to Telco Cloud.

Just a few highlights from MWC:

Several partners hosted demonstrations highlighting substantial performance and efficiency gains in their 5G Core:

  • Ericsson: showed 75% performance increase and 40% better energy efficiency with AMD EPYC 9005 processor systems vs. EPYC 9004 series processor systems.
  • Nokia: demonstrated 80% performance improvement on its CMG appliance with latest AMD EPYC processors.
  • ZTE: achieved 48% gain in performance-per-watt.

Also, Samsung showcased collaborations with AMD by completing multi-cell tests using its vRAN powered by AMD EPYC 8004 Series and 9005 series processors respectively in February 2025, following the industry's first end-to-end call with AMD EPYC 8004 platforms in early 2024. Companies also conducted rigorous tests using Samsung Core NF and AMD EPYC 9004 Series processor systems, demonstrating advanced capabilities in optimizing resource utilization.

“Our two-year EPYC roadmap gives our partners predictability and confidence to build and scale,” Piotr said.

Purpose-Built for What’s Next at the Edge

The edge is exploding—and AMD is ready. As more latency-sensitive, bandwidth-heavy applications move closer to the user, telcos need infrastructure that’s compact, power-efficient, and AI-ready.

The AMD EPYC 8004 Series, is designed from the ground up for edge and far-edge deployments. Combined with our broader portfolio, telcos can confidently run AI workloads at the edge—delivering faster insights with less power and complexity.

Sustainability Is Non-Negotiable—And AMD Delivers

Power and cooling costs are rising. Carbon emissions are under scrutiny. Telcos are being asked to do more—with less.

AMD is answering that call. We continue to lead on performance-per-watt, helping telcos build more sustainable networks without compromising on performance.

“We’re not just meeting our own sustainability goals,” said Piotr. “We’re enabling our customers to reduce OPEX and cut emissions with smarter, energy-aware compute.”
